So I took my MSM to a Miata "specialist" to get the timing belt, water pump, cam seals, and valve cover gasket replaced. What you want in step one is to LIGHTLY tighten the cover so that it is on properly, THEN you retighten everything to final specs. According to my manual the valve covers are 53 inch pounds (which is basically just snug) and 19 foot pounds for the intake plenum.
